Note: Yes, the pun in the title is intended (duel-meaning of “gripping.”) What can I say, I’m a speech therapist who enjoys word play!

Moving on – as you may know by now, I am dedicating the month of December to lifting up others in the blogging community! I began this adventure by writing about top feeding blogs, then continued the journey last week by covering physical therapy blogs.

This week’s post is all about occupational therapy!

While physical therapy primarily focuses on gross motor movement, occupation therapy focuses on fine motor and sensory skills. In addition, occupational therapists target activities of daily living. Here are some specific examples of what occupational therapists might target:

  • Cutting with scissors
  • Handwriting
  • Getting dressed and brushing teeth
  • Sensory regulation
  • Feeding self
  • Using fasteners (zippers, buttons, snaps, etc.)
  • And more!

If any of these tasks sound challenging for your child and you have concerns about his or her fine motor development, then I recommend the blogs below. In addition, please don’t hesitate to consult with your pediatrician and get scheduled to see an occupational therapist!

Let’s Water the Sponge!

The truth is that there are so many incredible websites out there for occupational therapy. Listed below are some of my favorites!

1.) CanDo Kiddo

Why I like it: This fun and educational blog was started by Rachel Coley, a pediatric occupational therapist and mother. She offers incredible tips for parents of newborns and small children. There are many free resources available on her website in addition to paid courses and email consultation services. Be sure to check out this website!

2.) The OT Toolbox

Why I like it: Colleen Beck, a pediatric occupational therapist and the founder of the website, founded the OT Toolbox in 2011! She created this site to encourage teachers, occupational therapists, and parents to teach fine motor skills to children. She offers ample resources on her blog and sends out newsletters as well! There are plenty of engaging and educational materials available for purchase. This website is one-of-a-kind and very informative, so be sure to check it out!

3.) Therapy Fun Zone

Why I like it: The founder of this site covers an incredible breadth of topics in regards to occupational therapy. She is a mother of two children herself and has created an impressive amount of free resources. There are crafts, printables, and games! Blog posts are made approximately once or twice per quarter and this site is packed full of fun ideas!

4.) Pocket OT

Why I like it: Cara Koscinski, a mother and pediatric occupational therapist, clearly demonstrates her passion and creativity in her website. She has ample experience and expertise aiding children with autism and sensory processing disorder. From printables to books, there is much to shop on her site. There are resources available not only for parents but for other occupational therapists as well!

5.) Your Kids OT

Why I like it: Cindy has been blogging since 2014! She is a pediatric occupational therapist who enjoys making learning fun for children. She offers fresh ideas about teaching handwriting and letter formation. Based in Sydney, Australia, she works with clients directly as well. Be sure to visit this website for more information!

This is certainly not an exhaustive list and there are a TON of other resources on the web! These are just the blogs that have caught my eye and could be worth following if you’re struggling with fine motor skills. Comment below if you know of additional pediatric occupational therapy resources!
